Taizhou Fm
Type Locality and Naming
Subei Basin. The Taizhou Formation was named by the Nanjing Institute of Geology and Paleontology in 1961. The type locality is in the Taiozhou City of Jiangsu. The key section is down the borehole Tai-1 at eastern Taiozhou City (119°55'E, 32°29'N).
Lithology and Thickness
The Taizhou Formation is divided into 2 members. Lower member is composed of brownish yellow thin- to medium-grained sandstone, brownish red muddy sandstone and sandy mudstone. Upper member is grayish green, grayish yellow and brownish red mudstone intercalated with siltstone.
Relationships and Distribution
Lower contact
The formation conformably overlies the Chishan Fm.
Upper contact
The formation unconformably underlies the Funing Fm.
Regional extent
The Taizhou Formation crops rarely out in surface, is only described in boreholes of the Taizhou area.

Fossils
The lower member is uppermost Cretaceous in age; the upper member belongs to the Paleocene. The lower member yields Cretaceous fossils of spore and pollen Gothanipollis sp., Gabonisporis sp., Rugubivesiculites sp., Jianghanpollis sp., Pterisisporites sp., Ephedripites sp.; ostracods Mongolocypris sp., Talicypridea sp., Quadracypris sp., Cypridea sp., Candona sp.; charophyte Grambastichara yuntaishanensis, Achistochara sp.; gastropods Goniobasis jiangxiensis, Pachychiloides macilent.
